about me…..

I am passionate about learning and creativity. I find that if I don’t use my hands in some way each day, my mental health suffers, which is why I knit, do pottery and woodworking, dig in the yard, draw, paint, sew, and recently, I have started embroidering. Throughout my life I have been an avid journal writer, which helps me clarify what I am feeling, so I know what I am thinking. I use many different ways to support my spirit, and my awareness of how I am in my body in any given moment is the first step.

My professional life has been predominantly within higher education as I have a B.A. in English and Secondary Education (1998) and an M.A. in Language and Literacy (2005). I have worked with adult learners since graduating college and shifted over to teaching online. I have developed content to bridge the gap for students who wanted to attend college but who were not quite ready for the reading and writing requirements, and I have worked hard to establish safe, virtual learning environments for students to expand their knowledge and awareness.

I began feeling the need for something more, and so I went through a year long training in 2013 to become a Transformational Life Coach where I led women’s writing circles and worked one-on-one with women interested in clarifying their purpose. Since then I felt the call to return to school and earned my Masters of Social Work (in 2020), and begin counseling individuals, which is my true passion. I am no stranger to working with adults and find that therapy is much like learning—oftentimes we need the right tools in order to move forward and to reach our goals. Some of us need to heal a little before we can even access what those goals are!

I draw on psychology and adult learning theory (andragogy) to understand my clients, teach when necessary, and guide when appropriate. I also lean heavily on my spirituality—what some may call religion, but what I view beyond the context of organized religion. I have a deep understanding of what can go wrong in a religious environment, but I also have experienced a wider and more grounded spirituality due to my bad church experiences. I have found that often our deepest wound can turn into our most profound strength, if we’ve healed enough to draw from the well of our wisdom. One of the ways I seek to support clients is to offer safe space for them to share those pains and then work together to heal them. I am familiar with organized religion and have spent time living in it at different points in my life—especially when it comes to being raised by very fundamental, conservative Christian parents.

Lastly, I am not here to tell anyone what to do, but I am here to be a sacred witness to your journey. I cannot fix anyone, partly because you are not mine to fix and also because I do not believe you are broken. Instead, I am here to walk alongside you, to listen deeply, to help you heal, and give you a spot of calm to do the hard work you are here to do.

All the best,
